01. Find all of a blog’s ranking and keywords with Domain Analytics.
First of all, create a free account on SEMrush using our SEMrush promo code.
Once you have logged in, enter the domain or page URL into SEMrush’s search bar and click on the “Search.” In my case, I have entered “socialmediaexaminer.com”.
Domain Overview
You will get a general traffic overview screen and keywords your competitor is ranking for.
“Organic Search” shows you the number of visitors who came through the SERPs. You can get a detailed report on Organic search by clicking the number of site visitors (blue color number). “Paid Search” show you the details on paid traffic, keywords and estimated cost. You can see total number of backlink in “Backlinks”. Also, you can view the details of all backlinks by clicking the blue color number. Next, you can view the information on display advertising and a graph of organic keywords and paid keywords. Also, you will see a graph of both organic and paid traffic distribution. You can select the range of this graph like 1 month, 6 months, one year or two years.
Along with above summary you will see other vital details such as:
- Top organic keywords.
- Organic position distribution.
- Main organic competitors.
- Competitive positioning map.
- Branded search keywords.
- Top paid keywords and sample ads.
- Information on backlinks, top anchors, anchor text distribution.
- Referring domains and indexed pages.
You can see the list of keywords that generate the most of organic traffic to the website under the “Top Organic Keywords”. Next to top organic keyword, you can find the organic position distribution. This give you a graph of keywords bringing users to the website via Google’s top 100 search results are grouped depending on the domain’s ranking for them.

Top Organic Keywords
By clicking on “View full report” under the “Top organic keywords”, you’ll see a comprehensive list of keywords, their search volumes, which of the page rank and in what position plus other details.
I’ll explain what the headings you see mean.

Keywords: The top keywords that Social Media Examiner are ranking for.
Position: Position of the URL for the keyword in Google.
Volume: The average number of queries for this keyword in a month.
KD (keyword difficulty): An estimate of how difficult it would be to rank well in organic search results for a particular keyword. The higher the percentage, the harder it is to achieve high rankings for the given keyword.
CPC: The cost of a click if someone advertised based on this keyword (in USD).
URL: The web page generating the traffic.
Traffic: The average percentage of all traffic Social Media Examiner is getting from this keyword.
So from this overview I can see that “How to Use Facebook Login on Your Website” ranks fairly well for “facebook login”. Approximately 24% of the total search traffic view this page.

Main Organic Competitors
Scroll down to the “Main Organic Competitors” where you will find the list of competitive domains and competitive positioning map.
Competitive domains are displayed depending on competition level, which is based on the number of keywords of each domain, and the number of the domain’s common keywords. If the domains have a high number of common keywords they are ranking for Google’s top 20 organic search results, they could be considered competitors. You can see a domain analytic report of a particular domain by clicking on that domain.
The competitive positioning map shows the strengths and weaknesses of a competitive domains’ presence in organic search results. Data visualization are based on domains’ organic traffic and the number of keywords that they are ranking for in Google’s top 100 organic search results. You can see a domain analytic report of a particular domain by clicking on colored circle of that domain.
Branded Search
Next, you can find the information on branded keywords.
Under the “Branded Search”, you will see the amount of traffic driven to an analyzed domain with branded keywords. “Branded vs. Non-Branded” gives you a breakdown of traffic driven to an analyzed domain with branded and non-branded organic keywords. Under the “Branded traffic trend”, you will find the changes in the expected amount of traffic driven to an analyzed domain with branded keywords in the past 12 months.
Top Paid Keywords
Below the branded search information report, you will see paid advertising information report. The paid advertising report gives you the information on top paid keywords and the distribution of the keywords. These are grouped into position in the SERPs. Also, you will see a list of main competitive domains and competitive positioning map. Below that, you will find the examples of Google AdWords ads.
02. Analyze your competitor’s backlink profile
If you wanted to find out link building strategies of your competitor, you can do it easily with SEMrush backlink analysis tool. SEMrush backlinks checker is a powerful tool for gathering link building data of any website. Firstly, click on the “Backlinks” under the “Domain Analytics” from left sidebar. Then, enter the domain into the search bar and click “check It”.

In the next screen, you will see an overview report of your competitor. This backlinks overview report is a great place to start your competitive research.
The top of the backlinks overview report shows the total number of backlinks leading to analyzed website. You can go to the backlinks report by clicking on the total backlinks number. The referring domain number is the total number of domains pointing at the analyzed website. Click on the referring domains number to go to the Referring Domains report.
Also, you can go to referring IPs report by clicking on the referring IPs number. The domain score shows you the importance of the analyzed domain using a 100-point scale. The trust score is calculated the trustworthiness of the analyzed domain same way as domain score using a 100-point score. The higher the number, the higher the quality and trustworthiness of analyzed domain.
You can quickly view all competitors’ backlinks, page score, trust score, anchor text and age of the link and backlink type. Also, you can find the do-follow or no-follow status, number of external links from the source page, new and lost backlinks.
From the anchors tab, you can find the anchor texts of backlinks. You can view the TLD distribution like .edu, .org, .com, countries and IP of the backlinks in the referring domains tab. Referring IPs show you a list of IP country wise along with the backlinks.
03. Find keyword suggestions for keyword research
Type your starting keyword in SEMrush search bar and hit enter. In my case I search for “weight loss diet”. Top of the overview report of keyword analysis shows you the total number of monthly searches, number results in the SERPs, CPC distribution, trend and paid search details.
There are two types of keyword reports in SEMrush. Phrase match keywords and Related Keywords.
Phrase match keywords show you variations of the target keyword. It will list all the search phrases containing a keyword you specified. Related keywords report shows different keywords that relate to the target keyword in one way or another.
Type your starting keyword into the search bar and click on “Phrase Match” from the top. You will get a list of keywords that represent variations on your target keyword. Also, you will get a list of related keywords by clicking on “Related keywords” from the top. Additionally, you can view these reports by clicking “View full report” button under the phrase match and related keywords.
In my case, the tool generated 5,686 phrase match keywords and 19,576 related keywords. Not bad! Select the best keywords for your project according to the volume, competition, trend and other information.
Our next goal is to improve the ranking of these keywords.
Use a keyword optimization plugin to optimize your posts for particular keywords. I use the Yoast SEO plugin to optimize my blog posts. Make your content as high quality as you can. Furthermore, try to add images, videos, and slides whenever possible. This will make sure you can retain your keyword ranking for a long time to come.
04. Find Ranking for a specific keyword
This is the third part of keyword analytic overview report. Type your target keyword into the search bar up top and SEMrush will present detailed information about that keyword. Scroll down to “Organic Search Results”.
Here you can view specific details like top 100 search results and ad copies related to that keyword. By clicking on these links, you can get reports with specific information.
05. SEMrush Projects
SEMrush projects are made up with number of tools which allows you to launch global campaigns for you site. Each tool focus on different aspect of optimizing a website and analyzing competitors. Also, these tools are separate from the general reports that are generated by the SEMrush search bar.
