Discover three key facts about Trump’s proposed U.S. ‘Gold Card’ immigration pathway, designed for high-net-worth individuals. Learn how it differs from the EB-5 visa, offers Green Card-like privileges, and its current legal status.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced plans to implement a new U.S. immigration pathway, known as a Gold Card. The Trump administration plans to roll the Gold Card out as early as this year.
Here are three key facts that you should know if you’re interested in applying for a Gold Card.

It’ll Be Targeted at High-Net-Worth Individuals.
Trump plans to axe the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program in favor of his proposed Gold Card if it is amended to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) by Congress. However, unlike the EB-5 visa, the Gold Card would not require an investment in a U.S. business; instead, it would require a one-time fee of $5,000,000 (USD).
It Will Provide a Clear Pathway to Citizenship and the Same Privileges as a U.S. Green Card.
The Gold Card would grant the same privileges as a Green Card, including the right to live and work in the United States, access to government benefits, in-state tuition at U.S. colleges and universities, and more. Trump also stated that his Gold Card would offer a pathway to U.S. citizenship for individuals who purchase one.
It would be remiss not to mention that Green Card holders have the benefit of a pathway to citizenship. It has not been specifically mentioned, but the Gold Card could potentially offer an accelerated path to citizenship, making it unique from a Green Card.
It’s Unclear if or When a Gold Card Will Be Available as a U.S. Immigration Pathway.
Trump does not have the power to authorize a Gold Card on his own. Legislation would need to be brought forth as a bill, reviewed, and passed in both chambers of Congress (the Senate and the House of Representatives). Only then can a Gold Card bill be signed into law by Trump.
Additionally, Trump does not have the power to override the amendment of the INA that authorizes the EB-5 Program. Therefore, the EB-5 visa will remain available through Sept. 30, 2027.
